88 Keys, 0 Excuses: Busting the Biggest Piano Learning Myths

Myth 1: You have to start piano when you are young.

Fact: Anyone can learn the piano. Whether you are a child, teenager or an adult, learning music does not depend on age, but having an appropriate approach for your age, interests, attention span and goals.

Myth 2:  You need to be naturally talented to play piano.

Fact: Talent may certainly help but is not a most important factor. If you are able to find a good instructor, do consistent practice, and have a willingness to learn from your mistakes, piano learning is for you.

Myth 3: You have to practice for hours daily.

Fact: While practice is a very important factor, if you want to see progress, hours of practice are not required. The quality and consistency of practice matters more than the amount of hours you put in. A focused practice session is what every aspiring pianist should be looking for.

Myth 4: If you make mistakes, you are not a good pianist.

Fact: Mistakes are a necessary part of learning any new skill including the piano. A good practice session isn’t one where you never make mistakes—it’s one where you learn how to recognize and correct them.

Myth 5: If you’re struggling, it means you’re not good at piano.

Fact: Struggling does not mean you are failing. It is just always difficult to learn any new skill. That is what makes learning challenge you when you encounter a difficult passage or rhythm.

You don’t have to be naturally talented to begin. You just have to begin. 🎹
